Harry Mitchell’s Ethical Lapses
Posted in Ethics on October 28th, 2008 by adminI’ve already told you how ethically challenged Harry Mitchell has taken $56,000 from corrupt politicians, Nancy Pelosi and Charlie Rangel, but did you know Harry’s pattern of unethical behavior goes further back? So in the words of one of those infamous infomercials, “But wait, there’s more!”
Harry Mitchell claims he has never taken campaign contributions from anyone who has been convicted. But Harry seems to forget that he met with, solicited and accepted contributions from Charles Keating who was the central figure of the savings and loan scandal in the late 80’s. (Keating was convicted of fraud, racketeering and conspiracy which was later overturned but later plead guilty to wire fraud and bankruptcy fraud.) Harry claims that he eventually returned the money.
When Harry Mitchell was Mayor of Tempe, he worked out a deal to exchange Phoenix Cardinal football tickets for City of Tempe parking spots. That led to an investigation by the Attorney General’s Office.
Also while Harry Mitchell was Mayor of Tempe, Harry and members of the city council accepted job perks which included credit cards, free tickets and other gifts. Harry Mitchell opposed efforts to increase oversight and public disclosure of this practice. He even voted against an ordinance that would have required lobbyists to disclose gifts and campaign contributions.
Harry Mitchell is also no stranger to discrimination lawsuits. While Mayor of Tempe, a group of Hispanics filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against the city of Tempe dating back to Harry Mitchell’s beginning as Mayor. The suit went to court and a jury found that the city did indeed discriminate. The City of Mesa had to pay out $2.4 Million in taxpayers’ money under Harry Mitchell’s watch.
Under a program created by Harry Mitchell, teenagers involved in a Sister City exchange, underwent an extreme hazing incident which included parading them down Mill Avenue wearing underware on their heads.
While Harry Mitchell was Mayor of Tempe, a Tempe Municipal Judge was caught stealing two million dollars from the city and elderly people to bankroll his Las Vegas gambling habit. Many lost their entire life savings. The judge pled guilty and was sentenced to eight years in prison but during the judge’s application for work furlough, Harry Mitchell recommended that the judge be released early from prison.
During the 2000 General Election against Republican Gary Richardson, Harry Mitchell was caught and charged as a criminal for stealing his opponent’s campaign signs. Mitchell even admitted to stealing the signs by saying, “I did it.”
